Porcelain bowl fired as Raku.

Raku-Fired Porcelain Bowl

This is porcelain clay fired as if it were raku clay. A chancey proposition at best. But it worked! 4 O'Clock Bowl: porcelain clay glazed and fired as Raku. Thirteen porcelain bowls were thrown. bisque fired, painted inside with a clear glaze, and then sprayed with a very dilute iron oxide solution, they were then treated exactly like raku pieces. Brought up to temperature rapidly in a Raku Kiln, removed red hot with long iron tongs and rolled into sawdust, covered for 5 to 10 minutes then tossed into cold water. They all survived, which gives me great appreciation for the inherent qualities of porcelain clay!
