TCHOTCHKE EARRING BOWLSTchotchkes, pronounced tcha-tch-keys, translates from the Yiddish as "little nothings". Okay, so I grew up in Brooklyn in the only gentile family for 2 miles around. These 2" to 3" slab forms were hump molded over small river rocks, definitely wabi-sabi. After being bisqued, just their rims were dipped in white raku glaze. They were fired in a raku kiln, tossed willy nilly into a smouldering mound of sawdust and covered with a garbage can lid to blacken the unglazed surfaces. Then they were pitched into a bucket of cold water. S'amazing they all survived, but that's tchotchkes for ya! Several ladies I know keep their favorite earrings handy in these little nothings. Status: 3 of the original 8 still in montefin's collection. For MORE RAKU click here.
