Salt Glaze Kitchen Utensil Holder & Canister Set

The Canister is 9" tall and 8" wide (lug to lug). The Vase is 7" high and 4" wide. The outside of each has nothing more than the surface created by salt introduced into the kiln at the white heat stage.

After adding salt at the height of the firing, small test rings were removed through ports in the kiln door to see if the orange-peel coating was thick and rich enough yet. If not, we added more salt through holes right above the gas jets. As soon as we removed a ring that was coated just right, we turned off the gas and tore down the first five or six courses of brick from the kiln door to "capture" the coating. Then, we let the kiln cool down about 12 hours more before opening it the rest of the way to see what we'd got.

It was better than Christmas morning!

Status: still in the potter's personal collection.
