Koans are brief word problems used by Zen Masters to distract the word-bound mind so it may approach close enough to enlightment or satori to be swept up in it.
It's ironic that they, the Masters, use words to attain what is essentially wordless. It's also very zen.
Here, are responses to koan that have been in use for hundreds of years, some, in one form or another, more than a thousand years. These koans survived because truth is in the question, not the answer. It is offered to the reader to ponder out which koan these answers might lead back to. Basically, this is zen Jeopardy.
Go figure.
